Understanding Front’s Contact Manager

In your Contact Manager in Front, you’ll find both Company Contacts (contacts that are shared across your entire company) and Private Contacts (contacts that are only visible to you). The Contacts Manager also allows you to search for other contacts from conversations in your inboxes that haven't yet been added to Company Contacts or Private Contacts.

Access the Contact Manager by clicking the three dots at the bottom of your workspace, then select Contacts.

In addition to your Contact Manager, contact information can also be accessed via the contact details plugin in your inbox. Learn more about the contact details plugin here.

Company contacts

Click the Company Contacts to view and manage all contacts that are shared across your company. Creating or editing contacts in the Company contacts section will update the contacts for all teammates.

Note that contacts from conversations in your shared inboxes are accessible through search but not automatically added to Company Contacts; users must manually add contacts to the Company contacts list.

Individual contacts

Click My Contacts to view and manage all of your Private contacts. These contacts are only visible to you.

Contact groups

To organize your contacts, you can create contact groups that are shared with your entire company, a specific team, or private to you. For more information on creating and using contact groups, check out this article.

Adding contacts

There are three ways that contacts can be created in Front: manually adding contacts in the Contacts Manager, importing a list of contacts, and automatic contact creation.

Manually create a contact

Step 1

Open your Contact Manager, then select Company contacts or My Contacts, based on whether you want to create a contact that's shared with the entire company or private to you.

Step 2

Click the blue icon at the top of your contacts list, then select Add contact

Step 3

Add the name and contact details for your new contact.

Step 4

To add more fields for this contact, click the + icon and select your desired field.

If you’ve created any custom contact fields, they will appear in this list. For instructions on creating custom contact fields, check out this article.

Step 5

Once you’re finished adding this contact’s information, click Save to create your contact.

Import contacts

To quickly add multiple contacts in bulk, Front’s Contact Manager allows you to import a list of contacts, in the form of a CSV file. To import contacts, follow the steps outlined in this article.

Automatic contact creation

Based on your settings, Front can automatically create contacts for you. To learn more, check out this article.

Contact integrations

Use Front's contact integrations to sync your external contacts with your Front contacts.

Contact API

Using our Contact API, you can automatically manage your contacts in Front.

View contact details

You can view contact details by clicking on any contact in the Contact Manager or on any conversation in Front, which will pull up a panel on the far right containing all the saved information for this contact in Front; including their contact fields, the conversations you've had with them, and any notes you've written. Click here to learn more about contact details.

How to edit a contact image

There are three different ways that contact images are added to Front contacts: manually editing the contact, automatically-created contact images, and teammates adding their own contact images.

Manually edit a contact image

From the Contact Manager

Step 1

Go to your Contact Manager and choose the contact you want to add an image for.

Step 2

Click Edit at the top right corner of the contact's details.

Step 3

Click the + sign above the contact name, and you will be prompted to select an image from your computer.

Step 4

Select the image you'd like to use for your contact, and click Save.

From a conversation

Step 1

Click on a conversation and open the Contact details plugin on the right.

Step 2

Click on the round photo for the contact, to the left of the contact name.

Step 3

A popup file picker window will appear for you to choose the saved image from your computer.

Automatically created contact images

Front will attempt to fetch an external sender’s avatar if it is available. If the contact does not have an avatar available, it will show as blank and a contact image can be manually added to their profile.

Teammate avatars

Teammates can upload their own avatars in Front in their settings, and the image will be visible to the rest of the team.

Merge contacts

Front allows you to merge multiple contact records. Merge contacts to reduce duplicates, and to consolidate conversation histories into a single contact record. For instructions on merging contacts, check out this article.

Delete contacts

To delete contacts individually, or in bulk, follow the steps here.
