How to add a Gmail Account

Overview

Follow these instructions to add your Gmail account to either your individual or team workspace in Front. A Gmail account is an email account that you and/or your team can log into using a password. 


Helpful information before you get started

  • Front will automatically import 50k of your most recent email messages. More on Gmail import behavior here.
  • Front has 2-way sync with Gmail accounts. More Gmail sync behavior here and exceptions here.
  • All Gmail labels will be converted into tags and applied to the conversation. The tags will be private or public depending on which workspace the Gmail account is added to.
  • By default, any Gmail account that is added to Front will have their threading mode set to Gmail. This will allow for a full two-way Gmail sync for all inbound and outbound email, open/archived status, and tagging. If you change the threading mode to any other option, the status of messages and tags will not be synced.

How to prepare your inbox before adding it to Front

To ensure your transition to Front goes smoothly, prepare your inbox using the following best practices before you add your Gmail account to Front.

  • For emails that still need to be worked on - create a unique Gmail label and apply it to all the emails you want to keep track of. 
  • Depending on the workspace you connect your Gmail account, follow these instructions after you've gone through the configuration steps in the next section:
    • Connecting Gmail account to your individual workspace:
      • Go into your Settings > My Inboxes > User Mailbox setting to archive All Mail before the current date.
      • Once you’ve archived your entire inbox, simply navigate back to your Inbox and click into the search bar and use the tag modifier `tag:` to search for all email conversations that have your unique Gmail label on it.
      • Select all and unarchive those conversations.
    • Connecting Gmail account to your team workspace:
      • All emails will be automatically archived by default.
      • Simply navigate to your Inbox and click into the search bar and use the tag modifier, tag:, to search for all email conversations that have your unique Gmail label on it.
      • Select all and unarchive those conversations.

Configuration Instructions

Step 1 - Head to your Settings > Inboxes or My Inbox, depending on the workspace you want to add the Gmail account. 

Step 2 - Select Email.

Step 3 - Input your Gmail account address and click on Next.

Step 4 - Select Gmail account.

If you don't see this option and instead see a forwarding address, in the blue box below the forwarding address, select the Connect Gmail account link

Step 5 - Authenticate with your Gmail account credential and click Sign in.

Step 6 - Front requires full Read and Write access to Gmail accounts. Click Allow to grant Front these permissions.

Step 7 - If you are adding your Gmail account as a team inbox in the team workspace, you will see an additional screen titled Import. Here you can:

  • Choose to import all historical conversations or not to. All imported conversations will be archived by default.
  • Choose to import and sync all folders or labels or not to.

If you do not wish to import these items, turn the toggle(s) off so they appear greyed out.

Step 8 -Then give your teammates access to the new team inbox, and click Create inbox.

I'm receiving an "admin_policy_enforced" error, what do I do?

Google is making to their Admin API settings around providing access to OAuth connected apps (like Front). You can take a look at their article for full details on the change; https://support.google.com/a/answer/7281227

If you have access to the admin console, would you please check the following settings:

1. Admin Console / Security / API Reference / API access / Enable API access is ticked.

2. Admin Console / Security / API Permissions - one of the systems are disabled, so enable them.

3. Admin console/ Security / API Permissions list / Front / Setting should be Trusted.

  • It'd be great to use front app individual inbox to manage my personal email. My company uses gmail. But the problem is that when I set up an individual inbox in front app, it throws everything together and doesn't separate primary from updates, promotions, etc. is there a way to mange only my primary or separate these inboxed when I manage in front?

    You could create rules to automatically add tags to the different types of emails. And you can make those tags noticeable in the second pane, so that you can quickly look over promotions. We're also getting ready to work on something called custom views, that will make this workflow even easier. Stay tuned for that announcement.
